// I hate Microsoft...
So on Friday June 25th, 2010 on yet another sunny, slightly windy and polluted day in Los Angeles I updated my iTunes on my Windows Vista laptop, so I could install the new OS4 for my iPhone. Ignorantly, I left 4 Notepad documents open during iTunes 9.2 install. After iTunes had finished installing it prompted me to restart. I clicked yes assuming I would be prompted to save all my work.
Instead Windows Vista gave me 3 seconds to press Save and locate a directory to save the document, but then promptly closed the document before I could save it. It then went on to repeat the same thing for the next 3 documents. Effectively, Windows deleted all my open documents by forcing them closed and rebooting without allowing me to save any of them unless I happened to be overdosing on meth or addirol with steam rising from the keyboard from such a great feat.
There is no way for any user to locate a directory, type in a file name and press Save within 3 seconds. WTF were Microsoft programmers thinking when they created their OS to close open documents without saving them?!
After rebooting and still furious that I lost a lot of important HTML code for an e-commerce system I was working on I thought "what the hell it can't get worse can it?", so I attempted to upgrade my iPhone OS only to watch Windows rear it's ugly ASCII head and spit out some garbled code that the Windows Error Reporting Tool has just crashed. That's a pretty good sign any further use of Windows Vista will end up in sad, sobbing tears or complete rage that makes someone attempt a field throw with their laptop across San Vicente Blvd during rush hour traffic.
Talk about being S.O.L. in the Wide World of Windows!
Are there any Quality Assurance groups at Microsoft, or did MS just outsource their entire software development to Open Source programmers in China, India, and eastern Europe and let the customers be the beta testers?! If Microsoft is so damn cheap why don't they let the software pirates be the beta testers? It's not as if they're going to get any better quality assurance from paying customers anyhow.
I can't wait till Apple and Google completely overtake Microsoft in the next 5 years and start offering customers what they want instead of garbage software that derails careers and sends people to the emergency room, no thanks to aneurysms, courtesy of Microsoft.
// I still hate Microsoft, but can't afford a Mac...
Wow...how do you have so much time to hate and get paid for a living. I find that people who dedicated themselves to hating something are very uninteresting, indeed!
ReplyDeleteI truly feel your pain!!! I have lost important work to the misbehaving of Windoze XP. Couple that with the increasing drag on performance due to having to run A/V software, I finally had enough.
ReplyDeleteSo, about 2 years ago, I got Ubuntu, and got RID of Windoze, once and for all. Currently, I am using Karmic (9.10) with a separate install of Lucid (10.04) for testing, etc. This is on the same machine that ran XP (eXtremely Pathetic). Response is much quicker, not having to deal with all of the bloat. Now, to be honest, is Ubuntu perfect? That answer has to be `NO`. But to me, it is a h--- of a lot better than Windoze.
One of the nicer things about Ubuntu is that its releases are more along the lines of `evolution` as opposed to the M$ practice of `revolution` (Office `ribbon` anyone?) After all, how can they (M$) entice you to spend more money!
OS X will abort a restart if you don't act to save open documents. If you do nothing the restart will time out.
ReplyDeleteI'm not entirely surprised Windows acts the way you describe.
But seriously, that 'can't afford a Mac' line is unrealistic.
If nothing else there are some good machines on eBay.
